Infinite-volume Metastability: on the shape of early droplets

چکیده

We study a very simple model for nucleation-and-growth in infinite volume in the low-temperature limit. Despite its simplicity, this model exhibits a very rich metastable behavior. Depending on the speed of growth, the system goes trough four different regimes: 1) both the “shape of the critical droplet” and the typical relaxation time are the same as in finite volume. 2) the “shape of the critical droplet” and its “formation rate” are the same as in finite volume but the “relaxation time” is shorter 3) the “shape of the critical droplet” is the same as in finite volume while the nucleation rate is smaller 4) the “shape of the critical droplet” is different from what we have in finite volume and its formation rate is smaller than the finite-volume formation rate of the finite-volume droplet.

Stabilisation of Emulsions by Trapped Species

We consider an emulsion whose droplets contain a trapped species (insoluble in the continuous phase), and study the emulsion’s stability against coarsening via Lifshitz–Slyozov dynamics (Ostwald Ripening). Extending an earlier treatment by Kabalnov et al(Colloids and Surfaces, 24 (1987), 19-32), we derive a general condition on the mean initial droplet volume which ensures stability, even when ...

Morphological transitions of liquid droplets on circular surface domains.

We study morphological transitions of droplets on a structured substrate containing two circular lyophilic domains for arbitrary domain and substrate wettabilities. We derive the stability criterion that at least one of the droplets must be pinned at the domain boundary with a contact angle smaller than (pi)/(2). This determines seven classes of stable or metastable droplet morphologies of the ...

Early development of the Amur sleeper (Perccottus glenii, Dybowski, 1877): a remarkable invasive species in Eurasia

To investigate the ontogeny of Perccottus glenii, embryonic, larval and juvenile development of P. glenii were examined under captive condition. The fertilized eggs with numerous oil droplets were orange-pink in color, prolate spherical in shape and had average length of 3.32±0.14 mm and width of 1.24±0.04 mm. From fertilization to hatching, the ontogenesis of the fish spent more than 200 h, a...

Statistical Modeling for Oblique Collision of Nano and Micro Droplets in Plasma Spray Processes

Spreading and coating of nano and micro droplets on solid surfaces is important in a wide variety of applications including plasma spray coating, ink jet printing, DNA synthesis and etc. In spraying processes, most of droplets collide obliquely to the surface. The purpose of this article is to study the distribution of nano and micro droplets spreading when droplets impact at an oblique a...
